Kubota vs. Massey Ferguson Tractors

According to a survey of Massey Ferguson dealers regarding 2018 sales projections, the brand demonstrates strength in zero-turn mowers and tractors under 40 horsepower.

Kubota is particularly strong in the compact tractor market. Kubota’s compact tractors have come a long way since the company introduced the 12 hp L200 back in 1972. Kubota machines are frequently referred to as the best compact tractor for the money.

Global Presence

When you invest in a tractor, you want to be confident that a solid corporate mission backs the brand and manufacturing history. When it comes to Kubota and Massey Ferguson, both brands are supported by companies with a global presence.

Massey Ferguson is one of the core brands of Allis-Gleaner Corp. (Agco), a company founded in 1990. The company’s other major brands are Challenger, Fendt, Valtra, and GSI. Agco’s predecessors were Allis-Chalmers (founded in 1909) and Deutz-Allis (formed in 1985). Agco reported 2016 revenues of $7.4 billion.

Kubota, a company founded in 1890, reported revenue of $14.7 billion in 2014. Kubota has about twice as many employees as Agco – 38,000 vs. 19,800.

Production Facilities

Tractor production is a critical factor in deciding between a Massey Ferguson vs. Kubota machine.

Kubota was founded in Japan, but where are Kubota tractors made now? Kubota is committed to American-made products. It has multiple tractor manufacturing plants in Georgia, and its engine plant is in Illinois.

In 2012, Massey Ferguson moved production of high-horsepower tractors from France to Jackson, Minnesota. A variety of European companies have also manufactured Massey Ferguson products, including Ebro and Carraro Agritalia. Iseki, a Japanese company that has produced compact tractors since 1961, has also made products for Massey Ferguson.

Customer Service and Support

Over the past couple of decades, Kubota has built a reliable network of more than 1,100 dealers in the United States. By comparison, Massey Ferguson lists about 700 dealers in its U.S. network.

When prospective buyers are comparing brands, they should compare warranties, service and parts availability. Given the vital work that many tractors perform, owners need genuine, capable customer support.

Engines

Kubota vs. Massey Ferguson compact tractor

Although both Kubota and Massey Ferguson offer tractor engines that meet diverse needs, the compact diesel engines from Kubota are leaders in their class. Kubota Engine America is the world’s leading manufacturer of non-automotive, multi-cylinder diesel engines in the under 100 horsepower class. Massey Ferguson has used engines from Perkins and Agco Power. In 2013, the latter introduced a 3-cylinder diesel for Series 4600 utility tractors.

When you compare similar models manufactured by Kubota and Massey Ferguson, you’ll find that Kubota tractors have a power advantage in some cases. For example, consider the sub-25 hp class. If you compare the 100.5 cu-in engine in the Kubota L2501 to the turbo 91.3 cu-in engine in the MF 1726E, you’ll find that the Kubota tractor delivers more power at lower RPMs.
